1 & 5: Self Harm and Suicide
"But why is the five pink?"
Stigma and shame makes it incredibly hard for people of all ages to talk about self harming behaviours or suicide. But we need to talk about it. Self harming behaviours are on the rise for youth, with most self harming beginning between ages 12 to 15.
The 1 & 5 was made to help start those uncomfortable conversations.
The effects of self harm can be lethal. Self-harm has been defined as
“a preoccupation with deliberately hurting oneself without conscious suicidal intent, often resulting in damage to body tissue.” They can often be thought of as a method for avoiding suicidal impulses.
Pink is believed to reassure our emotional energies, alleviate feelings of anger, aggression, resentment, abandonment, and neglect. So we're representing self harm and suicidal thoughts with pink to help reassure those who live with this illness they will be okay.
One in five people will experience mental illness this year. If we're going to put an end to discrimination based on mental illness, including self harm and suicide, we need to start talking about it more, and in more meaningful ways.
